I found it really insightful when your podcast guest, Adam Weinstein, said that in an unequal society with an all-volunteer army, the burden of sending troops to stabilize countries is not equally shared by all, but rather the brunt is borne by a certain socioeconomic class.

It is the "metaphysics", our basic building blocks of reality, that are messed up. You give a great example of this:

"We just didn’t understand that the force opposing us in Vietnam was less the puppet of a Communist superpower than an indigenous reaction against colonial rule."
