Thanks for the shout out. This was the Substack that I believe was read in certain quarters and contributed to the decision to pull back here: https://pstaidecrypted.substack.com/p/stepping-back-from-escalation-is.

That was an excellent analysis, Paul, which gave me a far more profound insight into what was really going on between Washington and Beijing (in contrast to the shallow crap one reads in the NY Times)

Nice to read a sensible analysis of the Trump-Xi meeting. As noxious as I find Trump, his intense realism and disdain for human rights rhetoric places him in an ideal position to establish a realistic framework for dealing with China. The problem is that Trump is so untrustworthy (as we Canadians can attest).

If Trump were serious in sustaining a workable relationship with China, he would next have a quiet word with the Taiwanese government and tell them not to count on a US defense guarantee (which would also be in keeping with a realistic foreign policy, as there's no way the US could successfully defend Taiwan if Beijing were to invade - which i doubt it would absent US provocations). And i would then go to TSMC and encourage them to build to build as many foundries in the US as possible, given that Washington won't be underwriting Taiwan's national security. Win-win for Trump and consistent with America First principles!

What a strange world we live in where its hard to make out what exactly is afoot & one has to understand the motivations of the players first (media or the leaders). I zoomed out to take a crack at why we find ourselves in this situation today: https://rajeshachanta.substack.com/p/the-7-habits-of-broken-cuckoo-clocks

Re: office construction

There are billions in CRE write downs coming for US regional banks and plenty of vacant office space for the next decade.

How can the Times's decision over the relative placement of two stories be dangerous, or, as you claim, prevent Trump from doing the right thing?
