I found it a little perplexing that Jordan had no concrete examples of what the China threat is other than a challenge to U.S. soft power, but I wonder what he was expecting from the interview. Did he know it would be more of a debate? I guess I’ll have to give his podcast a listen.
He'd been pressed a bit to defend his views in a recent episode of his own podcast featuring Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson. And, in fact, after that conversation he'd taped an elaboration of his views and inserted it--so I too was surprised that he didn't seem more prepared to defend his views on my podcast. That said, no, we didn't ask him if he wanted to come on the show to "debate." We just asked him if he wanted to come on the show.
You were confrontational enough that I got significantly more clarity on the issues. So no! Not pointless.
Thanks!
