The past few weeks have brought an extraordinary turn of events in Syria. After nearly five decades of Assad family rule, the regime suddenly fell over the weekend following a lightning offensive by various rebel groups. Now, the country is both celebrating the end of a dictatorship and struggling to figure out what will come next.

Today I was joined on the NonZero podcast by Joshua Landis, a Syria expert and director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. We spoke for an hour and a half about where the situation on the ground is going—and how it could go wrong.

Below is an important clip from that conversation in which Josh explains how the world can help the country transition to a better future. The clip is an excerpt from the Overtime section of the episode, which is reserved for NonZero Newsletter members (or what less high-minded newsletters call “paid subscribers”). Members can also find a transcript of this segment below the paywall.
